Bio

Luis Rozalén, better known as HD Substance, is a Spanish producer, DJ, live performer, journalist and electronic music educator.


Luis Rozalén, better known as HD Substance, is a Spanish producer, DJ, live performer, journalist and electronic music educator.

He began his musical journey as a drummer, but discovering Depeche Mode, synthesisers and drum machines ultimately changed the course of his career.

Before launching his solo career, he was a member of Ballet Mecánico, a project associated with synth-pop, EBM and industrial music.

He created the HD Substance moniker in 1994 and released his first track under that name in 1995.

His key early releases include Eleven —1997—, the Mushroom EP —1998— and Cáncer Pop —1999—.

He has performed at Sónar, FIB, Festimad, Trans Musicales, Movement Detroit and Berghain.

In 2011, he presented the analogue live project District 909 alongside Tim Baker at Movement Detroit.

Together with Leandro Gámez, he runs the Madrid-based label SUB_tl, whose catalogue now includes more than 90 releases.

He has also built an extensive career in electronic music journalism, radio broadcasting and education.

His body of work spans techno, Detroit techno, intelligent techno, house, ambient and experimental electronic music, alongside advanced hardware-based production and performance.
